Alaska Highways, Moose Family

There's a lot of road in Alaska, and a corresponding amount of opportunity for photographs in the middle of nowhere. Scenery is so plentiful that you really don't even have to aim your camera - just point it anywhere and click. Pay close attention to the roadside at all times, you may be rewarded with a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife sighting such as we had with these moose.

Just a little north of Talkeetna you come across a small stretch of highway that allows a glimpse of Mt McKinley on a rare ultra-clear day. We are still at least 3 hours from the park entrance, which although is due east of the mountain range, still demonstrates how massive this 20320ft peak really is.

I can't exactly remember where I took this shot, but I think it was on the Seward highway a bit south of the Portage junction.

While driving back from Homer just after Cooper Landing I spotted a family of moose trying to cross the river. Luckily for us there was a turnout right there, and we screeched our RV to a halt as best we could. 4 other vehicles followed suit and we proceeded to observe and photograph the family.\n\nThe sad thing was that these moose were trapped. The river was running a little too swift for the calves to cross, and the only other way to go was towards the small crowd of people that were watching them from their elevated position on the highway. So they just went back and forth in frustration.\n\nSensing their distress, I did not hang around as long as I would have liked.
