Portage Glacier

You can't see Portage Glacier from the side of the lake. You have to take a tour boat. Even if you just walk along the lake and spend some time in the visitor center, it's worth a stop to see such a beautiful valley and lake. Please also see the great shot I took of this area in my panorama section.

In late May there's still ice in the lake formed entirely by Portage Glacier. I like the way this image randomly plays between ice and reflections in the lake.

The ice goes on for a long way. Soon it will all be melted.

Despite all the ice, short sleeves are comfortable even right next to the lake. We would have liked to have taken the trail up and around toward a different glacier, but it was still closed due to avalanche danger. We didn't take the boat tour, either, since we figured we would be on enough boats this trip.

Great reflections in the ice lake.

Just across the main road from our RV campground is a set of lakes formed by the river that emanates from Portage lake. You can find lakes like these almost everywhere in Alaska. Just get out and walk around once in a while.
