Alaska RV Vacation Preparation

Preparing for your Alaska RV Trip

Here's what you need to know before heading to Alaska to drive an RV...
RV Rental
We used Great Alaskan Holidays to reserve our RV.  You will need to reserve one ahead of time.  Even in the pre-season they may not be available spur of the moment.

Airplane Tickets
Paid for 2 tickets and used 1 frequent flier.  Reserved them in February for our late May trip.  Flights back to the lower 48 all seem to be red-eyes, which makes it hard on a 3.5 year old.

Campground/Activity Reservations
None.  Didn't need them this early in the season.  Memorial Day weekend was crowded, but there was always at least one slot available to us at any campground.

We did reserve 3 bus tickets on the Denali park bus 2 days in advance.  That bus was full when we rode it.

All boat trips and other excursions were reserved the day before or as we walked in their front door.

To Save a LOT of Money Next Time
They sell activity books for about $100.  They are like those Entertainmnt books you can get at major cities in the US.  But these books are loaded with coupons for expensive boat rides and flights.  Get one, and you'll pay for it with just one or two coupons.

Also, when driving an RV somewhere, try to stay a few days in that destination so as to amortize the gas over more days.
