Other Mammals

We passed an alpaca farm on the way to O'Reilly's. The gift shop sold very soft clothes made out of their wool, but the merchandise was pricey. story
We never saw a koala in the wild. Our only captivity pictures were taken at David Fleay's Wildlife Park in Surfers Paradise. story
Humpback whales were easy to see in Hervey Bay. We arrived just at the tail end of the season. Many of the whales had babies like this one, some only weeks old. (Did you remember that whales are mammals?) story
Apart from the echidna, the duckbilled platypus is the only other mammal that lays eggs. It's about 2 feet long, and lives in quiet streams with several other platypuses (platypi?) diving for food at the bottom. story
What a surprise to see flying foxes (large bats) during the daytime in downtown Sydney! They were seasonal visitors to the botanical gardens, and they happened to be causing damage to the trees they were roosting in. story
