The cloissonet factory is where they handmake those lavishly decorated copper, kiln-fired urns, pots, and plates

Lunches on any self-respecting Chinese tour are usually held in factories. No, they aren't overcrowded cafeterias. They are real restaurants with decent food strictly intended for tourists so that after the meal they have something unique to shop for.\n\nI saw this also in the jade and silk factories. I am the early bird at the Cloissonet factory restaurant, and for some reason my guide never ate with me. So not only did I eat alone at my own table every time, but I was also completely alone in this restaurant.

The meals they serve for lunch in the factory restaurants contain quite a variety. They usually have a main dish, such as this pork dish, a green cooked vegetable, a soup, rice, and watermelon. Each plate comes out on its own, the watermelon is always last.

The first step in the cloissonet factory is to prepare the copper bowls like this man is attempting to do.

I didn't get to see him prepare anything since he spent all of his time with me fiddling around with a power tool.

The next step is to apply the wire containment ridges into which the paint will be deposited.

The patterns that the wire makes are very intricate.

Artists always follow a sketch made on paper.

A collection waiting for the paints.

Painting happens in up to 6 stages. After each coat the piece heads for a kiln where some of the color is destroyed. Hence the 6 coats.

Paints are really powdered minerals with a little water.

10-cloissonet-factory

Thanks to the raised wire, it's not impossible to color inside the lines.

After a few paint and bake cycles it's time for the polish.

The finished product in the convenient and large gift shop always looks worlds more complicated than whatever they were making in the factory.

Some of these things can get pretty big. This piece was selling for 72800RMB which is about US$9000. I think you can talk them down here.
