The Master of the Nets Garden in Suzhou, also known as Fisherman's Garden, is the smallest of 27 gardens in the city. It was a peacful place to escape the incessant Suzhou crowds on a gray morning.

You can see the Chinese fan embedded in the stonework on the ground, which is supposed to resemble a fishing net.

several different plants adorn a volcanic rock formation. Notice also that the windows are not set straight, rather they are parallelograms.

A Chinese couple relaxes beneath one of the pagodas. My guide said that this section of the garden has a replica in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I don't see why, it's really not that exciting to look at.

The fisherman's garden is the smallest garden in Suzhou. There is only one main pond, and of course it is stocked with those huge, multicolored goldfish.

Fisherman's Garden was built 900 years ago. It has changed family ownership many times, and each time it was added on or otherwise enhanced.

I saw a turtle crawl up onto some of those lily pads.

All the wood is dark, rich mahogany in the women's room. Unknown when this furniture was really made. Only the women were allowed in this room used mainly in the winter.

A beautiful inscription above an entrance. Someone please email me what it means!

The most ornate scultpture or carving in the garden. My guide said that the little dioramas on either side tell the story of an 80 year old man who became prime minister to the emperor and helped quell a rebelion.

This was the men's room, since the women had their own room.

outside the gardens is an incredibly narrow street surrounded by very old houses. It appears that nobody can afford to paint any of the buildings unless they are brand new.
