Humble Garden is the largest of the 27 gardens in Suzhou. The lotus flowers looked like they were just done blooming when I was there in late August. And strangely, like the rest of Suzhou, there were almost no birds. Still, despite the crowds and the gray skies, Humble Garden was a peaceful [re]treat in which to stroll around and lose yourself for the afternoon.

One of the many canals that weave through the city of Suzhou. We had to cross this one, then cross a busy street to get to the Humble Gardens.

Lotus flower. It's burgening green seedpod reminded me of a shower head. It's about that size, too!

This decorative window is set in a wall, not a building. Looking straight through you can see a pagoda called the Land Boat at the other end. The Land Boat sort of resembles a boat, but it's not floating at all.

09-humble-garden

This woman just finished floating through the lotus ponds harvesting the seed pods. She sold a few to some tourists. I'm not exactly sure what you do with them, but I'm guessing that you eat them.

10-humble-garden

Mmmm. Fresh lotus seed pods.

11-humble-garden

The tall pagoda in the background is not part of the Humble Gardens.

12-humble-garden

Small canals meander through the Humble Gardens. There is no set way to walk through the area - lots of different paths go every which way.

13-humble-garden

Waiting to sell some lotus seed pods.

14-humble-garden

I'm standing in a small building that had 4 large circular openings in each of its 4 walls. One direction for every season.

15-humble-garden

This is looking North at the Summer view. The Spring view was where the lotus seed vendor was. The other views didn't seem that spectacular.

16-humble-garden

A single lotus flower in a small sea of large leaves.

17-humble-garden-lotus-flower

Don't know what this flower is called, but it was virtually the only other blooming flower in the gardens. Honestly I was expecting a lot more flowers in such a tourist attraction. Apparently you can cook and eat the seed pods.

These lotus flowers were easily the size of my hands.

Here's that orange mystery flower again. If you know what it is, please email me.

22-humble-garden

A smaller and pinker lotus bloom.

Another large pagoda in the Humble Gardens.

At the western edge of the Humble Gardens sits the bonzai area. Bonzai literally means "potted plants."

26-humble-garden-bonzai

More bonzai. It wasn't clear whether these would some day be for sale, or whether this was a nursery for future garden plantings, or if it was just a different section.

28-humble-garden

Inside this pagoda is a small table that they used to use to play games such as chess.

An interesting view through the portal. It took a few tries to take this picture without someone unknowingly walking in front on the other side.

A beautiful lotus flower

31-humble-garden

Hey, it's me standing on one of the many bridges across the garden's small canals.

32-humble-garden

Not sure what the attraction was to big round doorways, but there sure were a lot of them.
