One of the artisan stops on my Beijing tour was the Lacquer Factory. I don't know how many of these there are in Beijing, but the woodcarving here was very well done. They even had a carved throne for the Chinese Empress. I think my guide thought that I was rich because he kept bringing me to these places half expecting me to make a large purchase. I guess I disappointed him in that respect.

A 50th-generation woodcarver, yes that's right - 50th, works on yet another masterpiece at a Beijing artisan lacquer factory.

Another artist takes his time generating a masterpiece at a Beijing lacquer factory. Two things that struck me here were how intricate the patterns were that they were following (see the paper next to him) and how dim the lighting was. I would have thought more light would have been better.

I've done a little amateur woodcarving myself, so this was a special treat to see it done by professionals. They must be used to a small volume of tourists because I certainly didn't phase them at all. Beijing artisan lacquer factory

One of the main finished pieces. It's fairly thin, so it's not really a functional piece of furniture. "Just" a wall decoration that took 5 people 62 months to complete. -- Beijing artisan lacquer factory

This was a different finished piece that they claimed used to be the empress's throne. They had an old B/W picture on the wall of the empress using it, but it looked Photoshopped to me. -- Beijing artisan lacquer factory
