Tiananmen Square is pretty much the center of Beijing. To the west lies the parliamentary building, to the south is Mao's tomb, to the east is the Chinese National Museum, and to the north is the Forbidden City. The square is a lrge paved area with throngs of tour groups and a monument to the people towards its center.

Tiananmen square is just a huge, flat, paved open space that is pretty much the center of Beijing. There are a few monuments here, and important buildings surround the area. There were dozens and dozens of Chinese tour groups, the leaders of which all held unique identifying flags. Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China

This is the main parlament building. Not sure what the Chinese government calls it, but it's where all of the country's officials converge to do their business. It's on the west side of Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China

A monolithic monument is the tallest thing on the square. It is a monument to all people who gave their lives for China. Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China

This was fascinating. This is only PART of the line to pay respects to Chairman Mao. I didn't go inside, but apparently Mao is interred in a glass coffin. No cameras are allowed, and I really didn't see the line moving. Mao's tomb is on the south end of Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China

07-tiananmen-square-mao's tomb

This is the Mao's Tomb line rounding the corner from the last picture and continuing ad infinitum down the street. I don't get it, but then again I'm from America. Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China

To the east of Tiananmen Square is the Chinese National Museum, also a place I didn't get to see. The sign in front is a big countdown to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.\n\nTo the north of the square lies the Forbidden City, my next destination on this day.
