Pico Bonito National Park

Just a 10 minutes walk down the road from Omega Lodge is the entrance to Pico Bonito National Park. It offers a fun hike through the jungle after traversing a swaying suspension bridge which cost us only $1 per person to cross. The hike passes several waterfalls and is almost entirely darkened by tall trees the whole way.

Pico Bonito is slightly obscured by clouds. Most of the national park is impenetrable and off limits anyway. There are a few hikes...

At the extremely underused park entrance, it cost us only $1.00 each to cross the wiggly suspension bridge over the El Cangrejal river into the park. You can also try the self-propelled cable car, but one guy staying at Omega Tours lodge had to be rushed to the hospital when he almost cut off his finger trying to operate the thing. So just walk across.\n\nTo get to the park entrance from Omega Tours lodge, simply walk down the road about 10 minutes.

My wife and daughter make their way across the wiggly suspension bridge over the El Cangrejal river and into Pico Bonito National Park.

A massive heliconia plant is just a few paces from the first waterfall, which is as far as we went with a whiny 4-year-old.

This small waterfall is as far as we went. It took less than an hour to get there, and the hike wasn't really steep. You could go on to see the much larger waterfall, but our daughter was not up for it. Besides, even in the perpetual shade of the jungle it was quite hot.

A rickety staircase gets you up one of the few steep parts on the jungle path within Pico Bonito National Park.

Check out the amazing curviture of this vine. It's not even a corkscrew - it just goes up and down in a simple wave. I wonder what causes that?

A tiny lizard hangs out on the railing of a small bridge in Pico Bonito National Park.

The southern view from the bridge over the El Cangrejal river. Omega Tours does at least one rafting trip per day down this river.
