West End, Roatan

West End is a $2 water taxi ride away from West Bay. Apparently there is a lot of nightlife here, but we didn't partake. Lots of restaurants and shops, plus a butterfly garden just outside of town.

It's an easy and pleasant water taxi ride from West Bay to West End - about $2 per person each way. Here we saw a For Sale sign on the beach. I wonder how much the land was going for?

We went to West End for dinner. There's basically only one road. I was amazed at how many workers they could cram into a single truck.

02-west-end

Here we are at the restaurant in West End. It was OK. They had 2 pet parrots that sometimes wandered over looking for food.

03-west-end

My wife loves lobster, and our daughter was keen to try it herself. Figures, she ended up loving the expensive dish.

04-west-end

Another truck full of workers. What were they working on? No doubt some construction project.

05-west-end

I asked the bartender of the restaurant where we could get some fruit. He said look for a truck by the side of the road. So we took a stroll down the only road in West End. And it wasn't long before we found 2 guys in a pickup truck selling all sorts of fresh fruit by the side of the road.

Our water taxi driver on the ride back to West Bay. We never had the same boat or taxi driver. Really, it's whoever has a boat and wants to shuttle people around.

A few more buildings at the end of West End.

09-west-end

The road through West End heads out to the beach when you get to the end of town.

10-west-end

The Luna Beach resort is between West End and West Bay.

11-west-end

I thought this was interesting - there's a section of shore that doesn't have any beach, so they built a walkway over the rocks.

12-west-end

There is a butterfly garden just outside of West End. I didn't think it was very exciting - they didn't have many species or many of each type.

What was more interesting at the butterfly garden was the toucan pen. You go inside! There are 4 keeled-billed toucans inside, and they are pretty tame.

This was amazing - the keeled-billed toucans had babies, and they were being housed in a separate cage. I thought they looked like little zombie birds.\n\nThey had lots of other parrots in cages, too, at the butterfly garden. It's probably worth a stop if it's on your way, but I wouldn't make the butterfly gardens your ultimate destination or anything.
