A closeup of the silversword plant, found only at the top of Haleakala. It is a relative of the agave. Like agaves, these plants live for dozens and dozens of years before producing a single 10-foot seed stalk at the end of their lives. Then they die.

A couple of silverswords adorn the top of Haleakala. Unfortunately because of the drizzly weather, this was about the only interesting thing we saw on the top of the volcano.\n\nI've been to the top before in better weather and I can definitely say it's worth it. The place is other-worldly. You can tell from the bottom if there will be a view at the top or not. Postpone your drive if it looks bad.

Strange bird seen on the way up Haleakala. It's not a nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose. If you know what it is, please email me.

There were a few wildflowers in bloom on the road to Haleakala.
