The drive along Maui's northwest coast is sparsely populated. This set of cairns was found on a breathtaking hike down to Nakele Blowhole.

Nakele Blowhole on the NW coast of Maui. The hike down is quite worthwhile. Watch out when you get close because you are likely to get soaked without warning. The guy in this photo got a little closer after this particular blow and then quickly recoiled after being completely drenched.

Despite the prevalence of cairns along the wide trail to the Nakele blowhole, it is still easy to get a little lost. Just around the corner to the right, both the cairns and the trail quit, and it's up to you to do your best following the coast.\n\nThere are actually 2 paths down to the blowhole from the road. I didn't take the second more eastern path, but it looked like it was the simpler way to get down.
