Definitely take the Lanai dolphin cruise that leaves from Lahaina. Even if you aren't lucky enough to spot dolphins they have excellent snorkeling, way better than Molokini.\n\nWe spotted a couple of bottlenose doplhin at about the halfway point between Lahaina and Lanai.

When the Lanai dolphin snorkel boat arrived at the coast of Lanai, we encountered a large pod of spinner dolphin. The pod probably contained close to 100 dolphins. They were very amiable, closely approaching our boat, leading and following it, and occasionally launching themselves out of the water for a spectacular display.

On the way back from Lanai to Lahaina, we were fortunate enough to spot a third species, the spotted dolphin. The pod numbered no more than 10, and none of them were the least bit interested in our boat.

Whale watching season ends in mid April. But a few stragglers may be visible at the end of the month after the rest have left to travel to the coasts of Alaska. Here a baby humpback greets our boat.

Whale watching season ends in mid April. But a few stragglers may be visible at the end of the month after the rest have left to travel to the coasts of Alaska. This was one of the few times we saw a fluke.\n\nOn the night of our arrival to our condo in Kahana, we saw a humpback whale breach way in the distance against the sunset. It was a nice welcome.
