Our arrival into the state
|
As the flight attendant announced our initial decent into Anchorage, we
glanced out the window at the sunset. "The time is now midnight." Yikes,
we knew it stayed light late, but this was unexpected. It was Kelly's
goal to see a whale and mine to see a bald eagle. We hoped we got to
see plenty of wildlife -- this was the place to see it!
We landed and caught a taxi to the RV rental outfit where our RV was
parked outside waiting for us. I arranged to have it be our hotel room.
The taxi driver laughed at everything we said. I don't even remember
making any jokes.
We loaded our luggage into our RV. Wow, it looked nice. It didn't appear
to be an older economy model. I wonder if we got upgraded or something?
We tried to close all the curtains to keep the light out. No use. The
light poured in all night and we eventually fell asleep.
We awoke the next morning and got the operator's tour of our vehicle.
Everything seemed pretty straightforward. Got the keys and we were off to
pay a visit to our friends at the Puffin Inn. 4 of our friends were in
Alaska the week before we arrived, and we had a one day overlap in our
vacations.
We woke them up and listened to their stories. They had a great time, but
I was a little surprised that not all of their tales carried the
enthusiasm I was expecting. They had some bad weather in Denali and didn't
really see too many animals. Their K2 flightseeing expedition seemed to
be the highlight. We were thinking about doing that anyway, and what with
the spectacular clear day ahead of us -- let's do it.
We left our friends to finish up their Alaskan adventure shopping in
Anchorage while we took off north in the RV to start ours. We stopped
at the grocery store to compliment the food that we brought with us.
That was a falacy -- we heard that everything in Alaska was expensive,
so we brought our own food. In reality the only food items that were
pricier than in the lower 48 were soda and fresh fruit/veggies. Guess
we didn't have to pack that box of Macaroni and Cheese which ruptured in
the suitcase. After the grocery store we were off to Denali, but before
that, we'd stop in Talkeetna to see if we could get on a flightseeing
tour.
