Waved Albatross

01° 22' 21"s

We found the waved albatross on Espanola Island, the only island this species of albatross reproduces on. You can find them flying around at sea looking for food in lots of areas, but Espanola is where they breed.

The waved albatross is a large bird. It has a wing span of about 5-6 feet! We got there at the right time of year to see some pairs courting. What a special moment! A few pairs of albatross were already incubating eggs.

The courtship ritual goes like this: male and female stand a few feet apart facing each other. Both swing their necks back and forth as they circle, reposition, and approach. Then they have a harmless little swordfight with their closed bills for a few seconds. The billfight ends with one or both of them opening their bill wide for another few seconds and then clamping it shut. The sound that a waved albatross bill makes when it clamps closed is not unlike a pair of musical wood blocks being hit together. The process repeats.
