Iguanas and Lizards

Land Iguana
Marine Iguanas
Lava Lizards

Land Iguana

Land iguanas were not common. We only saw 2 on Santa Fe Island and they weren't advertised as being on any other islands where we might see them. As with most of the Galapagos animals, these guys couldn't have cared less that we were standing right next to them. They were about 4-5 feet long from tip of nose to tip of tail. Notice the spikes on the back of his neck and the red eye?

Marine Iguanas

The marine iguana is the only species of iguana that gets its food from the sea, and it only lives in the Galapagos Islands. These guys dive under water and eat the algae off the rocks. Almost all the ones we saw were too busy sunning themselves to show us how they swam. I only spotted one marine iguana in the water. Whereas the land iguanas were solitary, the marine iguanas were somewhat colonial -- if you found one you could usually spot 10 more.

Lava Lizards

We didn't learn much about the lava lizards. They were pretty abundant and came in lots of different colors. Not surprisingly, you could find them on lava.
