What was the weather like?

We went in June and the weather was slightly hot. We were thankful that we always took plenty of water with us wherever we went! It never threatened to rain.

Does everyone speak English?

Everyone we talked to spoke some broken English. We never experienced a mastery of the language, but it was definitely not hard to get by without knowing greek.

Did you experience any hostility towards Americans due to the Yugoslavian War?

Nope. None at all. I'm sure it was relatively obvious that we were Americans, and everyone was quite friendly. It made me think that Greece's apparent siding with Slobodan Milosovich (the view shown on American television in the form of protests of American troup presence) was the minority.

What were the people like?

People were generally friendly. Almost everyone spoke some English. They smoked like chimneys. The food everywhere was always the same. Some men carried and played with a string of beads called "worry beads."

Are they up-to-date on technology?

Not really. We never saw a touch-tone phone -- they were all rotary. Credit card machines were still the slide-back-and-forth imprinting kind instead of the swipe-and-dial authorization types. So their communications infrastructure needs a drastic upgrade.

The city of Athens has all the modern conveninces and traffic hazards. The islands and I would guess Central Greece still have their share of donkeys used as transportation.
