Panorama Photography from Around the World

Digitally-stitched panoramas

It's hard to get a decent panorama. Panorama photography requires that you have even/identical exposure throughout all photos. You need to have good horizontal alignment and just enough overlap for the panorama software to perform well. Finally, your digital panorama photo needs to have constant focus, else the overlaps will not work. With a little practice, you'll be able to get excellent results with your digital panorama photography!

A few miles south of the Portage Glacier junction on Highway 1 in Alaska you can find a turnout that will give you this incredible view. This shot was taken at about 8:30p in early June. The mountain range in the distance is what borders the Portage Valley.\n\nFor more information visit my Alaska Highways section.

Blackstone Glacier located in the west section of Prince William Sound. You have to take a boat to get to it; there are several convenient tours out of Whittier, Alaska. \n\nThis glacier is stable - it is neither advancing nor receding, which means that the same amount of ice is being created through annual snowfall as is melting/calving each year. Some glaciers, such as Exit Glacier just north of Seward, Alaska, have been receding for more than 2 centuries. Other Alaskan glaciers are advancing. My personal scientific conclusion - you can't draw any global warming conclusion from glacier evidence.\n\nFor more information visit my Whittier, Alaska section.

Snow Geese (front) and Sandhill Cranes (rear) populate a small pond at the entrance to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in central New Mexico. The birds are here between mid-December and mid-February and they easliy number over 10,000. Get there before dawn to experience the Lift Off of the snow geese from the main pond. Sacsayhuaman, pronounced similar to "sexy woman," is the set of meticulously constructed Incan ruins that overlooks the city of Cusco in Peru. These 500-year-old ruins are made entirely out of stones that lie on top and next to each other so perfectly that you couldn't put a piece of paper anywhere in the mortarless seam. Many of the base stones are taller than a person. For more information visit my Peru section.

Sand dunes in the center of Death Valley National Park. Right after we stopped here our "check engine" light went on (it later turned out to be nothing). What better place, though? It was even hot here in October. Death Valley is gigantic. It takes several hours to get from one side to the next, and there's not much to see in between the "popular" stops. I don't think I'd go again unless someone told me I missed something really worth stopping for.

Only 10% of the visitors to Alaska get to see Mt McKinley and the mountain range of Denali National Park. We were the lucky ones, especially since we saw it 2 days in a row. This shot was taken probably 2/3 the way up from Anchorage near Byers Lake. There's a Denali scenic view rest area there with a short walk up to an observation hill. I also highly recommend flying over Denali in a plane chartered from Talkeetna. It's expensive but absolutely worth every penny as long as it's clear out.\n\nFor more information visit my Denali, Alaska section.

After you get through the main gate where Chairman Mao's portrait hangs, you come to the Wumen (Meridian) Gate which is where you buy your entry ticket. The crowds of people never abate - they are as thick everywhere in the Forbidden City as they are before the entrance. For more information visit my Beijing Forbidden City section.

A great shot of the Golden Gate Bridge from the first battery lookout point. You can see San Francisco through the gate just to the left of the near tower. Alcatraz is the small island on the left of the panorama. This panorama was taken in the late afternoon on a clear day in November. The Golden Gate Bridge connects Marin County with the San Francisco Penninsula. The water flowing under the Golden Gate Bridge is the only access the Bay has to the Pacific Ocean.\n\nMore information and photos on the Golden Gate Bridge can be found in my California section.

One of my new personal favorites. This website can't do this photo justice - so many kittiwakes (a type of small seagull) all trying to nest on the same Gull Island just off the coast of Homer, Alaska. The smart ones nest high. The less experienced kittiwakes get stuck with the low nests which are in very real danger of being washed away by the waves in a typical storm.\n\nThere are many boat tours that take you to Gull Island, or you can charter your own water taxi and hang out for as long as you like. Kittiwake rookeries can also be found outside of Seward, Whittier, and Valdez to name a few.\n\nThis photo was taken in late May. I don't know how long the kittiwakes last on that island, but I would imagine their babies are hatched and gone a month or two later.\n\nFor more information visit my Homer, Alaska section.

HorseShoe Bend is about a 3/4 mile hike. It's located just a few miles south of Page, AZ on the west side of highway 89. The Colorado River makes a gigantic horseshoe pattern around a towering rock right after it flows out of Lake Powell and through the Glenn Canyon Dam on it's way to the Grand Canyon.

This is the southern coast of Maui looking at the town of Lahaina. The faded mountain peak to the right of the large one in the foreground is Haleakala. This is an unusually clear day to be able to see the volcano peak. Engulfed almost perpetually in the clouds is Iao Needle. This panorama was taken from a whale watching boat that left from the Lahaina harbor. We saw only a few whales at the end of the season. For more information visit my Maui section.

From the top of Mt Rigi just outside of Lucerne, Switzerland you can see forever. Well, almost forever. Lake Zug is prominent at the base of the mountain looking north. Uncountable small villages spread over the entire distance. And it looks like it could be perpetually green here.\n\nTo get to the top of Mt Rigi, take the train to Lucerne. Take a boat across Lake Lucerne to Vitzau. Then take a fun cog train ride to the top of the mountain. Definitely worth the trip!

The beautiful edge of town in Lucerne, Switzerland. Farmers market tents are setup on the right river shoreline, and a cathedral looms on the left. It's easy to get here by train from almost anywhere in Switzerland. When you arrive you can enjoy a nice walk or take a boat ride along the huge lake (behind me in this photo). The boat ride can drop you off at numerous places, including Vitznau where you can take a beautiful and fun cog train to the top of Mt Rigi.

Mesa Verde is a must-see if you are in the southwestern corner of Colorado. The national park lets you walk around the ruins as long as you sign up for one of the many guided tours, which are inexpensive and fascinating. Tours may involve steep ladders and stairs, extreme dropoffs, and hot sun so be prepared. Here, we tour the Cliff Palace. There are several palace tours from which to choose. You could do 2 or 3 in a day if you wanted.

Portage Glacier just south of Anchorage, Alaska is a land-locked glacier that created its own lake and streams. I love the placid reflections peeking through the ice. Potters Marsh is on the souther outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska. When we were there in late May, there weren't too many birds hanging around the boardwalk portion of the preserve. You can find a genuine Saturn 1B rocket lying on its side in the Rocket Garden at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This rocket was used for lunar test flights and a manned Apollo 7 launch. In front of it you can see the orange scaffold that astronauts used to get into the Apollo spacecraft. You can walk it, too, but you have to imagine that you are ten stories high getting into the 2nd-loudest thing ever made by man to get shot out into space.
