One of my new personal favorites. This website can't do this photo justice - so many kittiwakes (a type of small seagull) all trying to nest on the same Gull Island just off the coast of Homer, Alaska. The smart ones nest high. The less experienced kittiwakes get stuck with the low nests which are in very real danger of being washed away by the waves in a typical storm.\n\nThere are many boat tours that take you to Gull Island, or you can charter your own water taxi and hang out for as long as you like. Kittiwake rookeries can also be found outside of Seward, Whittier, and Valdez to name a few.\n\nThis photo was taken in late May. I don't know how long the kittiwakes last on that island, but I would imagine their babies are hatched and gone a month or two later.\n\nFor more information visit my Homer, Alaska section.
