Everyone has heard of the Amazon Rainforest, but even despite its immense size very few have seen it. The Amazon Jungle is dense with plant and animal species.
My Amazon Tour started in the town of Puerto Maldonado, took me to the Posada Amazonas rainforest resort, and continued up the Tambopata River to the Tambopata Research Center. And this week-long excursion into the middle of nowhere was with only 1 change of clothes since the Venezuelan airlines temporarily lost my luggage (I got it back in Cusco).
The Peruvian Amazon Basin isn't too difficult to get to, but you'll take some interesting modes of transportation to get there. You will also enjoy a lot of scenery and a relaxed atmosphere.
I'll bet you've never stayed in a lodge like this - no electricity, no hot water, no doors, not even a fourth wall. And a 5:00a wake up call. But you'll love every minute of it.
The river basin is dense with thousands of species of plants and gorgeous, pristine scenery.
The most pleasant surprise of my Amazon Tour. Not only all the beautiful types of butterflies, but the relative lack of pestering insects.
There are some unusual mammals in the rainforest. Monkeys, capybara (pig-sized aquatic rodent), tayra, even a tiny deer. I even saw a rare jaguar!
