Cusco was the capital of the Incan Empire 500 years ago. Today it provides an excellent base camp from which to travel to all the ruins. Many ruins are a short distance away from the city. You might consider traveling to them on horseback!
Cusco Attractions Downtown Cusco - Magnificent Spanish churches, museums, and a beautiful town square called La Plaza de Armas are the highlights of the ancient Incan capital. Sacsaywaman - The head of the Puma, these ruins overlook the entire city of Cusco. Impeccable stonework is just a brief hike up the hill from the town square. Tambomachay - A small ruin with a still-working fountain. Puca Pucara - Expansive views of the Andes are seen at these Incan ruins just across the street from Tambomachay. Quenqo - Sacrificial site also has one of those solstice shadow tricks carved in the rock. Tipon - Incredible agricultural terraces with the stone aquaducts still flowing perfectly. Pikillaqta - Huge pre-Incan (Wari) ruin on the outskirts of Cusco. Average stonework, but there was a lot of it.
