Brief History of the Inca Empire
Brief History of the Inca Empire
The mountain in the background of all those postcard shots is called Wayna Picchu or Huayna Picchu. You can hike to the top of it if you don't mind a hike that is essentially all stairs. When you get to the summit you won't believe what you can see.

Just beyond these two huts is where the Wayna/Huayna Picchu trail begins. In the background you can see Wayna/Huayna Picchu, and you can barely make out even more agricultural terraces on the top. Yikes.

Wayna/Huayna Picchu, the huts where the trail starts, and llamas eating their breakfast on the main lawn terraces.

Sacred Rock stands between the 2 huts at the base of Wayna/Huayna Picchu and appears to mimic the mountainscape beyond.

Another view of Wayna/Huayna Picchu from the huts. More agricultural terraces and another hut are viewable from here. Yikes!

You need to sign in at the Wayna/Huayna Picchu trail entrance.

If you don't have a severe fear of heights, I definitely recommend the trail to you for unparalleled views and experiences. You can always turn back at any time, and there are frequently cable hand railings to guide you up the steps. There is never a place where you are "climbing" -- it's all stairs. The closest I can compare this trail to in both difficulty and length is Phoenix's Camelback Mountain, but without the intense heat! This particular photo was taken at the start of the trail.

This is the view from the top of Wayna/Huanya Picchu. The peak at the top/center of the photo is Machu Picchu. Obviously all the agricultural terraces and dwellings are visible at the main site. At the bottom right of the main site you can see the two large Wayna/Huayna Picchu huts where the trail up here starts.\n\nThe Inca Trail comes from the upper left of the picture and drops into the site at the top. I don't know if there is a place to collect $20 admission fee if you come in via this entrance.\n\nThere is a long dirt switchback that starts in the bottom left corner and ends at the multi-story visitor center. This is the slightly-scary, one-lane road that the busses take. At the end of the day on our busride down we were met by a friendly waving boy dressed in native garb at each switchback. He would shout and wave at the bus, then sprint straight down the footpath to met the bus again and again and again. Each time we saw him it was funnier and funnier. At the bottom of the road he boarded the bus, said greetings in several different languages, and then proceeded to ungraciously collect tips.

A zoomed view of the Machu Picchu ancient city from the top of Wayna/Huayna Picchu. The full-resolution version of this photo is available from the main Machu Picchu page adorned with text that identifies the main areas. Definitely check that out if you have broadband.

Mick on top of Wayna/Huayna Picchu. When I got here I goofily started singing, "I'm on the top of the world looking... down on creation and the only explanation I can find...." An unassuming pair of Japanese tourists giggled and replied in thick accents, "Ha. Carpenters."

The Wayna/Huayna Picchu trail is extremely steep in some places as this photo sorely attempts to show.
