Minimize Your Cost/Day
If you have more time than money, then getting the time off to travel is not your problem. Financing your trip is. In this case it is helpful to prepare for any trip by understanding what it all might cost you, then preparing appropriately to maximize every dollar spent.
You will especially want to keep close tabs on what your estimated cost/day is. Cost/Day =
Total cost of the whole trip
--------------------------------------
Total # of days spent on trip
You need to make this ratio as small as you can. To do this you can make the cost part low, the days spent high, or both.
For example, if you spend $2000 on a 3 day weekend, that's not very smart for someone like you who has more time than money. But if you span your trip 4 weeks and you spend $2000, that's a much better ratio. And you've effectively just had an awesome vacation for a whole month.
Sounds obvious so far, right?
Now, what is typically the largest cost in any trip? Airfare. Depending on where you are going, a round trip ticket could be over $1000 even if you plan for it way in advance. In general, the farther you go the higher the airfare. To help minimize your cost/day ration, you need to stay longer in the places you travel farther to.
This ultimately means that if you're going to Australia, plan to stay as long as you possibly can. Or find a way to get there other than by airplane. You might get a temporary job on a ship, for example.
Or if you're not leaving the continent, trains and busses get you there on a much more scenic route. Depending on the country, hitchhiking may be an option, too.
A Place To Stay
The next highest cost on a trip is lodging. Hotels can be very pricey. And unfortunately you need a place to stay every single night. Luckily minimizing your lodging costs is simple.
Hostels offer a very inexpensive alternative to hotels. Plus you are guaranteed to meet fellow travellers while staying there.
Camping is very cheap if you want to lug around a sleeping bag and tent. Some places rent them - you could camp in a beautiful National Park using rented gear all week for what it might cost for a single night's hotel.
