Finding More Time
If you have more money than time, congratulations.  Finding the time to go on a big trip is your problem.  Here are some great ideas to carve out an easy week or two:

Use All of Your Vacation
Most people get 2 or 3 weeks of vacation, and many of them really don't take full advantage of it.  They work and work and work under the utterly mistaken belief that their workplace would fall apart if they left.  If this sounds like you, the first thing you need to do is realize that you are completely 100% expendable.

In these hectic days there is never a good time to take vacation.  So notify your boss WAY in advance that you will be taking 2 weeks off for a big trip.  The more advance notice you give, the more time s/he has to plan around your absence.  Then buy your plane tickets that day.  Airfare is the most expensive part of the trip, and nobody wants to be liable for reimbursing you because they couldn't plan for a 2-week hiatus with 6 months notice.

Use holidays to your advantage.
For example, Labor Day falls on a Monday.  You can leave Friday evening before and return the Sunday after and get 8 full days of vacation while only taking 4 days off.  You can see a lot in 8 days.

Take Full Advantage of Your Business Trips
If your job sends you places, take an extra day or two to see the sights.  If you have control over when you go on your business trip, take it near a weekend.  The company pays for the airfare, you stay and pay for the extra weekend.  You might even consider flying your family up after your business is through.  You'd be amazed at how many people don't even think to do this.

What do you have more of -- Time or Money?
There are many ways to afford a trip like one of those that I have taken.  Before we review some of them, it's important for you to understand which you have more of -- time or money.  Read the column that more suits you first, then read the other if you think it will be helpful.  Also see my Saving for a Big Trip section.

How to Afford an Exotic Vacation

The once-in-a-lifetime trip of your dreams may not be as far off as you think!

Minimize Your Cost/Day
If you have more time than money, then getting the time off to travel is not your problem.  Financing your trip is.  In this case it is helpful to prepare for any trip by understanding what it all might cost you, then preparing appropriately to maximize every dollar spent.

You will especially want to keep close tabs on what your estimated cost/day is.  Cost/Day =

Total cost of the whole trip
                --------------------------------------
Total # of days spent on trip

You need to make this ratio as small as you can.  To do this you can make the cost part low, the days spent high, or both.

For example, if you spend $2000 on a 3 day weekend, that's not very smart for someone like you who has more time than money.  But if you span your trip 4 weeks and you spend $2000, that's a much better ratio.  And you've effectively just had an awesome vacation for a whole month.

Sounds obvious so far, right?

Now, what is typically the largest cost in any trip?  Airfare.  Depending on where you are going, a round trip ticket could be over $1000 even if you plan for it way in advance.  In general, the farther you go the higher the airfare.  To help minimize your cost/day ration, you need to stay longer in the places you travel farther to.

This ultimately means that if you're going to Australia, plan to stay as long as you possibly can.  Or find a way to get there other than by airplane.  You might get a temporary job on a ship, for example.

Or if you're not leaving the continent, trains and busses get you there on a much more scenic route.  Depending on the country, hitchhiking may be an option, too.

A Place To Stay
The next highest cost on a trip is lodging.  Hotels can be very pricey.  And unfortunately you need a place to stay every single night.  Luckily minimizing your lodging costs is simple.

Hostels offer a very inexpensive alternative to hotels.  Plus you are guaranteed to meet fellow travellers while staying there.

Camping is very cheap if you want to lug around a sleeping bag and tent.  Some places rent them - you could camp in a beautiful National Park using rented gear all week for what it might cost for a single night's hotel.

Free Trips!
There are hundreds of jobs that actually require travel.  If you want to see the world on somebody else's dime, get one of these jobs.  And you don't have to be in sales and marketing.  Cargo ships, cruise ships, airlines, and resorts all have tons of jobs across the country and overseas.  Get into training and you'll have to go all over the place to teach.  Why not get paid for seeing the world?!
These are tips on how to afford a big trip - either using the money you have more efficiently or affording the time to get away in the first place.  If you want to learn about how to just get enough money to travel in the first place, visit my Saving for a Big Trip section.
