US-60 Arizona Wildflowers, AZ

If the rains don't disappoint between Thanksgiving and Valentines Day, we're likely to have a great Arizona wildflower season. The best time to photograph them seems to be in March, and certain places have quite an abundance. On US-60 the Arizona wildflowers really start coming out after you get out of Phoenix. And in one unlikely spot, Florence Junction, there is both wildflower abundance and variety.

A representative from the Phoenix Botanical Gardens told me that white poppies are the result of recessive genes, not necessarily a mutation.

I got as close as I could to this California Poppy with my macro lens. No small trick with the wind blowing. I probably took 10 shots and only one was in focus.

This shot gives you some idea of the variety of flowers in such a tight area. The yellow flowers in the front right are brittlebush - seen everywhere in Phoenix in the spring regardless of rainfall. The orange flowers are Mexican gold or California poppies. The fuscia in the back along the fence are penstemon.

According to my Audobon Guidebook: "Caution: Gland-tipped hairs can cause severe rash." This plant gets its name from the way the stem curls like a scorpion's tail. Mexican gold poppies are in the background.

Mixed in with the potent orange of the poppies you can see some green stems with small white rings around the top as if they were strange little witch's hats. These hats are what sprouts after the poppy germinates. The petals fall off and a pod shoots out of the center filled with seeds.
