Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, FL

The winter months are the best time to visit Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge because that's when it's most populated with migratory birds. Merritt Island is just north of the Kennedy Space Center, and its mostly refuge. See the FAQ for more details.

Alligators are everywhere in the marshes. They aren't too interested in humans, though. This one is actually pretty small.

A small lookout tower around mile 7 (?) lets you see the expanse of the wildlife refuge. We didn't see anything special from the tower, but we didn't stay very long. Great place to get out of the car and stretch. There is also the start of a long trail here.
